The National Flag of Kenya
Bendera ya Kenya
The flag of Kenya was introduced upon Kenya's independence from Britain, on December 12, 1963. The flag itself has not changed since its introduction. The colours of the flag where taken from the KANU (Kenya African National Union) movement, of black, red, and green.
The flag itself is a horizontal tricolour. The stripes, from top to bottom, are black, red, and green. The black represents the black majority. The red represents the blood spilt in the struggle for independence, and the green represents the lands natural wealth. The white fimbriations dividing the stripes represents Kenya's hopes for peace.
On the centre of the flag, is a stylised Maasai shield, with two crossed spears. These are placed to show Kenya's desire to defend its history, people, and land.
