Republic of Equatorial Guinea

The National Flag of Equatorial Guinea

The national flag was first flown upon independence, October 12, 1968. The flag itself consist of 3 horizontal bars, made up of green, white and red. On the hoist of the flag is a blue triangle. In the centre of the flag is the national coat of arms.

The flag has remained largely unchanged since then, apart from in 1972, when the national shield was replaced by the regime of Francisco Nguema. After he was deposed in 1979, the original shield came back. The national shield is made from a silver shield, on which is a silk-cotton tree. In an arc over the shield are 6, 6-point stars. These represent Rio Muni, and the off-shore islands. In a scroll underneath, is the national motto, Unidad, Paz, Justicia (Unity, peace, and justice).
