The Republic of Cuba

The National Flag of the Republic of Cuba

In the 1820's during the revolt of Spain's many American colonies, Cuba remained loyal. However, there began to be a movement to head towards independence. In the 1870's, Cuba rose in revolt, and the civil war ended with Spain granting the island a huge degree of autonomy.

during this battle, two flags of Cuba appeared, first, the flag of Yara. In appearance, similar to the flag of Cuba. But with the colours reversed. A blue bottom half, white top, with a white star on a red square on the hoist side of the white stripe. This flag was used whenever "the legislators of the Cuban people meet."

However, the more famous flag that is well-known today, also appeared at about the same time. Created by Narciso Lopez. It consisted of 3 blue stripes. These represent the 3 parts of the country the nation was divided into during the independence wars. The white stripes symbolise the purity of their patriotic cause. The red triangle symbolises the blood of the people who fought for the nation, and the star represents independence itself.

After the Spanish American War, Cuba fell under American control. However, the American President Roosevelt had huge sympathies for the island, and abandoned the treaty. Cuba finally gained its independence in 1902.

Even after the Cuban revolution, which brought Castro to power, the flag remained. A powerful symbol in Cuba.
