The Republic of Chile

La Estrella Solitaria

The National Flag of Chile is made up of 2 equal horizontal bars, white, and red. in the upper hoist canton, over the white bar, is a blue square. Within the blue square is a 5 pointed white star.

During Chile's struggle for independence, the Chilean government called for a flag to represent the fledgeling nation of Chile. The first design was a horizontal tricolour consisting of blue, white, and yellow bands. It was first flown in1812.

A second flag was instituted in 1817, this time, replacing the yellow stripe with red.

Finally, because the second flag was a little confusing, being somewhat similar to France and the Netherlands, the flag was changed, and towards the end of 1817, the current flag of Chile was instituted. The red represents the blood spilt for independence, the white represents the snow on the Andes, the blue represents the sky and the Pacific ocean, and the star represents guidance and honour.
