The Republic of Djibouti

The Flag of The Republic of Djibouti
جيبوتي

Djibouti was led to independence by the Ligue Populaire Africaine pour L'Independance. Independence was gained for Djibouti on June 27, 1977. The flag that the LPAI used was the inspiration for the flag that was used for the fledgeling nation. It was a halved flag, with a light blue top, and green at the bottom. The LPAI used a red  triangle on the flags hoist, with a white 5 pointed star, set at an angle.

The flag used for the new nation copied the 2 main colours of blue and green, but reversed the colours of the triangle. It became a white triangle, with a red star. This time, set upright. Each of the 5 points representing each of the areas where the Somali's live. British Somaliland, French Somaliland (Djibouti), Italian Somaliland, the Ogaden, and the Northern Frontier District.

The colours of the flag can be seen as having different meanings attached. Blue for the sea and the sky, green for the earth, white for peace, and the red star represents unity. Another set of meanings has the blue representing the Somali's, and the green representing the Afar.
