The Republic of Guinea

The National Flag of Guinea

On October 2, 1958, Guinea gained its independence from France, under the leadership of Ahmed Sekou Toure. He was a close associate of Kwame Nkrumah, the dictator of Ghana. Toure brought in a national flag that used the same colours as the flag of Ghana, the first nation to use the colours after gaining independence. Toure then proceeded to run the country as a dictatorship until his overthrow in 1984, when he was overthrown by Lansana Conte, who then proceeded to rule until his death in 2008, maintaining control by despotic means.

As a former French colony, the fact that the design matches that of the French tricolour cannot be overlooked, though it is not certain. The Guinea flag is similar to the flag of Mali, but with its colours in reverse.

The flag of Guinea is a tricolour, with red, yellow, and green stripes. The red stands for the peoples sacrifice, yellow for the sun and the richness of the earth, and green for the nations vegetation.
