Algeria

Drapeau de l'Algérie
علم الجزائر

The Algerian flag consists of 2 vertical bars of green and white. There is a red star and crescent emblem emblazoned over the centre of the flag. The green represents the beauty of nature, the white represents peace, and the red on the star and crescent represents the bood spilt during Algerias fight for independence.

The inspiration of the design comes from the standard of the Emir Abdel Kadir in the 19th Century. His standard consisted of two bars of green and white.

The origins of the current flag is somewhat unclear. However, it is widely believed that the flag was inspired by a design from Messali Hadj, a nationalist leader in Algeria. A design he came up with in 1928. The colours of red, green and white are widely used colours in many other Islamic flags.
