Gabon

The Flag of Gabon

In 1959, Gabon adopted a horizontal tricolour if 3 unequal stripes. The top was green, the bottom was blue, with a thin yellow central line. This line represented the equator, on which the nation of Gabon lies. In the upper canton, they placed the French tricolour, the flag of the colonial power.

Upon independence, the French tricolour was dropped from the flag, and the central yellow stripe was widened to an equal width. Now, the colours have taken on different meanings. The yellow represents the sun, the green represent the natural resources, including timber. The blue represents the sea.
