The Republic of Cape Verde

The National Flag of Cape Verde

Cape Verde finally achieved independence from Portugal in 1975, with the PAIGC driving the movement forwards. The ambition was to gain unity with another ex-Portuguese colony, Guniea-Bissau. To highlight this, they adopted a flag that was almost identical to the Guinean flag. The only difference being the emblem on the hoist of the flag.

However, relations between the two soured, and the Cape Verde decided to move ahead as a separate nation. In 1992, with the final severing of ties with Guinea Bissau, a new flag was created. This new flag was a blue field, with 3 stripes running across it, in a pattern of white, red, and white. The blue stands for the sea and the sky, the white for peace, and the red for the effort on the road to success of the people.

Also on the flag is a circle of 10 stars. The circle symbolises the nation of Cape Verde, with the 10 stars representing the islands in the nation.
