The Republic of Botswana

The National Flag of Botswana

Botswana gained its independence from Britain on September 30, 1966. The new flag of the nation of Botswana was adopted on the same day.

The flag itself is a horizontal tricolour, light blue, black, and light blue. The light blue is inspired by the motto on the coat of arms, "Pula." Which means "Let there be rain." However, in recent years, the government has began a debate on the correct shade of blue, with many companies producing flags with different shades.

The black is edged with thin stripes of white. This has 3 meanings, 1. The multi-ethnicity of Botswana, 2, racial harmony, and 3, they are inspired by the national animal of Botswana, the Zebra!
